GEO Audit Checklist 2026: 20 Questions to Diagnose Your AI Visibility

Before you invest in Generative Engine Optimization, run this 20-question audit. It tells you exactly where your brand's AI visibility gaps are and which ones to fix first.

This checklist covers four audit areas: content structure, entity authority, technical signals, and competitive benchmarking. Each question includes a priority tag (Critical / High / Medium) and a brief explanation of why it matters. The checklist takes 2 to 4 hours to complete manually.

Most GEO advice starts with tactics: add schema markup, write FAQ sections, get G2 reviews. That advice is correct but incomplete without a diagnosis first. A brand with no third-party citations should not start with schema markup. A brand with plenty of citations but unstructured content has a different fix than one missing from review sites entirely.

This audit gives you a complete picture of where you stand before spending time on the wrong things. It takes a single morning to complete and produces a prioritized action list specific to your brand's actual gaps rather than a generic GEO checklist.

Section 1: Manual AI Testing (5 Questions)

Start with direct observation. Before auditing your own site, find out what AI systems actually say about your category right now.

1
When you ask ChatGPT "what are the best [your category] tools?" does your brand appear?Critical
This is the baseline. If your brand does not appear in unprompted category responses, you have an AI visibility problem regardless of your Google rankings. Test with 5 different phrasings of the category question and note which brands appear consistently.
2
Does your brand appear in Perplexity responses for category queries?Critical
Perplexity shows source citations inline. If your brand is cited, you can see exactly which page is being cited and why. If not, Perplexity's source-first approach makes it easier to diagnose the gap than ChatGPT.
3
Does Google show an AI Overview for your most important category query, and is your brand in it?Critical
Google AI Overviews reach the largest audience. If an AIO appears for your category query and your brand is absent, that is the single highest-priority gap to address. Check in incognito to see unbiased results.
4
When a buyer asks a specific comparison question ("X vs Y" where Y is you), does AI give an accurate and favorable response?High
Comparison queries are high-intent. If AI misrepresents your positioning, features, or pricing in a head-to-head comparison, you lose deals you never knew you were competing for. See the guide on fixing incorrect AI brand information if you find errors.
5
How many of the 3 to 5 competitors AI recommends in your category have stronger third-party presence than you?High
Competitive benchmarking contextualizes your absolute score. If all your competitors have 50+ G2 reviews and you have 8, that gap explains most of the difference in AI citation rates. Document competitor third-party presence as your benchmark.

Section 2: Entity Authority Audit (5 Questions)

Entity authority is the most commonly neglected area in GEO. AI systems form opinions about brands based on what the public web says about them, not just your own site.

6
Is your G2 profile complete with category tags, feature list, pricing tier, and at least 10 reviews?Critical
G2 is one of the most heavily weighted third-party sources in AI citation models for B2B SaaS. An incomplete or thin G2 profile is a direct cause of low AI citation rates. A complete profile with 10+ reviews typically doubles citation rate compared to a thin profile. This is the highest-ROI single fix for most brands.
7
Does your LinkedIn company page explicitly state your category, key use cases, and target customer in the About section?High
Google indexes LinkedIn and uses it as an entity signal. Vague About sections ("we help companies grow") provide no useful category signal. Explicit language ("AI visibility tracking for B2B SaaS marketing teams") gives AI systems a clear categorization hook.
8
Has your brand been mentioned in any industry publication (TechCrunch, G2 roundups, vertical press) in the last 12 months?High
Third-party editorial mentions on authoritative domains are strong entity signals. A brand with zero editorial mentions is categorized by AI systems as less established, regardless of its actual quality. Even a single mention in a relevant roundup article moves the needle.
9
When you search your brand name in quotes on Google, do 6 or more distinct third-party domains appear on page 1?High
Brands with 6+ distinct third-party domain mentions on page 1 of brand search results have measurably higher AI citation rates. Count the domains on page 1 of a quoted brand name search. Under 4 is a gap; under 2 is a critical gap.
10
Is your Crunchbase profile accurate, complete, and does it correctly categorize your product?Medium
Crunchbase signals legitimacy and founding context. An incorrect category or missing information on Crunchbase can cause AI systems to miscategorize your brand. It takes 20 minutes to fix and matters for AI entity graph clarity.

Section 3: Content Structure Audit (5 Questions)

AI systems cite content that directly answers questions. Most B2B SaaS content is written for human engagement, not AI citation. This section finds the gaps.

11
Does your homepage explicitly state what you do, who you are for, and what makes you different in the first 100 words?Critical
AI systems often cite the homepage when answering direct brand queries. If the homepage opens with a vague headline ("The future of work") and buries the product description below the fold, AI cannot extract a usable citation. The first 100 words should include your brand name, category, and core use case in plain language.
12
Do your top 5 blog posts answer their topic question directly in the first paragraph?High
AI systems tend to pull from the opening paragraphs of pages. Content that buries the answer after a long introduction rarely gets cited. The test: read the first paragraph of your top post. Does it contain a specific, citable answer to the implied question? If not, rewrite the opening.
13
Do at least 5 of your pages include a FAQ section with 4 or more questions directly relevant to buyer research queries?High
FAQ sections dramatically increase the surface area available for AIO and AI chat citation. They directly match the conversational query format buyers use in AI search. Pages with FAQ sections have 3 to 5x higher citation rates than equivalent pages without them per content analysis data.
14
Do you have dedicated comparison pages for your top 3 to 5 competitors?High
Comparison queries ("X vs Y") are high-frequency in AI search research. If you have no comparison page, the AI system will construct a comparison from whatever information it can find, which often favors the brand with more third-party presence. Your own comparison page gives you control over the framing. See the Jeevan AI compare pages as a reference format.
15
Is your brand description consistent across your website, G2, LinkedIn, and Crunchbase?Medium
Inconsistent brand descriptions across surfaces create entity ambiguity. If your website says "AI visibility platform," G2 says "marketing analytics tool," and LinkedIn says "SaaS startup," AI systems receive conflicting category signals and may categorize you incorrectly or exclude you from category responses entirely.

Section 4: Technical and Measurement Audit (5 Questions)

16
Does your homepage have Organization schema markup with name, URL, logo, and description?High
Organization schema is a direct machine-readable signal to Google (and therefore AI systems) about what your brand is. It takes 30 minutes to implement and reduces entity ambiguity. Check with Google's Rich Results Test tool.
17
Do your key blog posts have Article schema with headline, datePublished, and keywords?High
Article schema signals freshness and topic relevance to Google's indexing system. Freshly dated, keyword-tagged content has higher AIO citation probability because Google's AI model prioritizes recent, explicitly categorized information.
18
Are your most important pages indexed and appearing in Google Search Console with no coverage errors?Critical
A page that is not indexed cannot be cited in Google AI Overviews. Check GSC for any indexation errors on your product page, comparison pages, and top blog posts. Submit key pages manually via the URL Inspection tool if indexation is delayed.
19
Are you tracking AI Overview impressions in Google Search Console?High
GSC added an AI Overview filter in 2025. If you are not tracking this separately from standard organic impressions, you cannot tell whether your GEO work is having any effect on Google's AI channel specifically. Set up this filter now as your baseline.
20
Do you have a monthly process for testing your brand's citation rate across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini?High
Without consistent measurement, you cannot tell if your GEO investments are working. A monthly manual test of 10 category queries across 3 platforms takes about 30 minutes and gives you enough signal to track trend. For automated measurement, AI Share of Voice tracking automates this across platforms.

How to Interpret Your Score

Count how many of the 20 questions you can answer "yes" to. The Critical items (questions 1, 3, 6, 11, 18) carry the most weight — a "no" on any of these is a high-priority fix before anything else.

0-7
Critical Gaps
Core entity and content foundations are missing. Start with G2 profile, homepage clarity, and manual AI testing before any other GEO work.
8-14
Partial Foundation
Some foundations in place. Focus on your lowest-scoring category (entity, content, or technical) and clear that area before moving forward.
15-20
Strong Foundation
Foundations are solid. Focus on competitive benchmarking, increasing citation rate per query, and expanding coverage to more category queries.

The most common pattern: B2B SaaS brands typically score well on technical and content questions but poorly on entity authority questions (6 through 10). The G2/Capterra/editorial presence gap is the most common root cause of low AI citation rates, and also the most actionable fix. Start there if your entity section has 2 or more "no" answers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a GEO audit take?

A basic GEO audit using this checklist takes 2 to 4 hours for one person. The manual AI testing portion takes about an hour. The entity audit takes another hour. The content and technical review takes 30 to 60 minutes for a focused B2B SaaS site.

What is a good AI Share of Voice score for a B2B SaaS brand?

For early-stage B2B SaaS brands, 2 to 8 percent AI Share of Voice is typical. Growth-stage brands generally see 8 to 22 percent. Established category leaders can reach 22 to 40 percent. See the full AI visibility benchmarks for India B2B 2026 for detailed breakdowns by stage.

What is the single highest-impact GEO fix for most B2B brands?

For most B2B SaaS brands, the highest-impact single fix is completing their G2 and Capterra profiles with explicit category language, key features in plain terms, and at least 10 customer reviews. These profiles are heavily weighted by AI systems when constructing category responses.

Should I audit competitors as part of my GEO audit?

Yes. You need to understand your relative position against the 3 to 5 brands that AI currently recommends in your category. A brand with 10 percent AI SoV might be leading in an emerging category or trailing badly in a mature one. Competitor context is essential.
